How old do you have to be to get Massage Therapy?
People of all ages may receive massage therapy. I treat clients from newborn to senior.
What if I fall asleep?
That is perfectly okay! Many people fall asleep during their massage. If you fall asleep I will gently awake you when turning into a different position or at the completion of the massage. No need to be embarrassed if you snore, many people do and it does not affect the massage you will receive.
Do massages hurt?
I work within your tolerance for every treatment. Massage should not be hurting so that you are holding your breath, so please let me know if you would like a lighter or deeper pressure. Your feedback is always welcomed.
Will I be sore after my massage?
The days after your massage it is normal to feel a bit of soreness if you receive a deeper tissue massage. Â I will give you some tips after your massage that may help you handle or prevent soreness from coming in.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
You may get undressed to your comfort level. Some people take their clothes off while keeping their undergarments on and some people take all of their clothes off including their underwear. Each person differs and it changes depending on what area you are being treated on. You are covered with sheets for the whole treatment and only the areas being worked on will be undraped. We will discuss which areas we will be working on and in most cases having access to the skin in that area makes for a much more effective treatment. If you are not comfortable with exposing the skin in certain areas or if you would like to have a massage while remaining fully clothed, just let me know before the treatment is started so we can find the most comfortable and beneficial way to treat you.
What if I have a medical condition? Is massage safe for me?
On your health history form there will be questions regarding any medical conditions you may have. Some conditions require a modification to massage. For example, during certain trimesters in a pregnancy you are unable to lay on your stomach or directly on your back. With blood pressure or heart conditions it may be necessary for you to lay on your side during the treatment. Most conditions are safe for you to have a massage. If you are uncomfortable or unsure whether or not massage is safe for your condition, I encourage you to speak with your physician to see if massage is appropriate for you.
What if I am taking medication?
On your health history form there is a section to list any medications you are on, this includes vitamins. I will ask you what the medication is used for to find out if there is anything I need to do differently for your treatment. With some medications you may just need a lighter massage, a different way of being treated or may need to lay a specific way on the table. We will discuss this together.
What will my first session be like?
You will be emailed an online health history form prior to your appointment. If you are unable to fill this form out prior to your appointment, please arrive 10 minutes early to complete an intake form.Â
I will go through your health history with you in a private room and discuss any limitations you may be currently experiencing and what your goals for receiving massage are - whether it be for relaxation or treatment of a particular condition. I will then go through a few assessments to get a better idea of what may be causing any potential discomforts, that way an appropriate treatment plan can be discussed. You will be informed of the benefits, side effects, potential risks and any contraindications of the treatment you will be receiving. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and your comfort will be of the upmost importance during the whole visit.
After this, I will leave your room so you can comfortably disrobe to your comfort level for the treatment and get on the massage table as explained. You will be appropriately draped during the whole treatment and only the areas being worked on will be undraped as long as your comfort allows.
During Your Massage, feedback is welcomed! I will use pressure within your tolerance and if at any point you would prefer lighter or deeper touch, please let me know! Many people talk during their massage and many remain silent or fall asleep.
When your massage is completed, I will leave the room to give you privacy for getting dressed. Once dressed, I will discuss your treatment plan with you and we can decide if a next appointment will be beneficial.
